The one weakness of this model is the spinning lid. It is nice to have but it makes it easy to take a wrong bearing because the lid spins too freely. Also, there is no detent or marking for exact alignment with the physical case - you have to guess. This compass is not only affordable but is also made very well. It is very sturdy and made with a heavy metal that won't likely break without a fight. It is very clearly marked for finding north and super accurate. Without a doubt the best buy online for a compass. 5 stars The following review received 6 helpful votes out of 10 total votes: Review Date: 2007-12-01 "Somewhat unreliable compass, buy a more expensive one for professional use" If you are looking for a reliable, fast working compass, Silva Lensatic 360 Compass is probably not what exactly you are expecting. It usually takes more than 15 seconds to stabilize and finally identify some direction as north. What is worse is, the direction it points to is sometimes not north. Especially you are using it in a city that has a wide spread public transportation, such as Chicago, it gets effected by the magnetic field created by the electricity used to operate the trains, all too easily. This means you will have trouble using your compass when you are less than 100ft away from an electricity operated rail-track (not just the train, though the trains make it go completely haywire). I used other compasses in similar conditions and I must say they all outperformed this buddy. Don't get me wrong, this can be a good choice for light camping and etc, but it is definitely not a professional tool. I would have returned it already but I do not want to pay for the shipment, and finally decided to give it to my young nephew as a toy. 3 stars The following review received 2 helpful votes out of 2 total votes: Review Date: 2007-10-06 "Bulletproof" I bought this compass several months ago, and it has worked flawlessly. In addition, I have accidentally dropped it onto concrete and other very hard surfaces numerous times, and it continues to work perfectly. I am more than pleased with it; it was well worth the price. 5 stars The following review received 2 helpful votes out of 3 total votes: Review Date: 2008-04-01 "Great Value" I wanted a good compass for a reasonable price and this compass is perfect for me. Unlike my previous experience with compasses, it is very easy to use. I was impressed with how rugged the case is. This compass will come with me on all my hikes. 5 stars | |
